West Coast Express is a 40-mile, 8 station Commuter Rail Line that runs just 5 peak direction rush hour trips each weekday out to Mission from downtown Vancouver along the tracks of Canadian Pacific that is also the contract operator.

All trips use F59PHI Locomotives in a push-pull configuration with trains being pushed to Vancouver in the mornings and pulled in the evenings. All trains consist of between five and ten Bombardier BiLevel Rail Cars. These rail cars are maintained by VIA at its maintenance facility at Pacific Central Station.

Until the opening of the Evergreen Extension of the SkyTrain Millennium Line in 2016 that connects with the West Coast Express at Coquitlam Central and Port Moody, the West Coast Express also ran (as of December 2011) two AM Peak westbound and five PM peak eastbound TrainBus Trips that provide some additional service for passengers. This TrainBus service was replaced by a limited-service extension to Mission of Translink Local Bus 701 that makes four special round-trips per day, one in the late AM, one in the early PM, and two in the evenings to Mission as a regular local bus route before operating non-stop to Mission after leaving the normal Translink Service Area. Mission as other bus connections operating by BC Transit (including other more complex connections via multiple buses to and from the Vancouver Metro Area).

The system is fully ADA complaint using mini-high level platforms and then bridge plates to one car in the middle of the train.

From the start of the West Coast Express until the COVID-19 pandemic West Coast Express had food service via a Cappuccino Bar on the lower level, this consists of a counter in place of a restroom. At stations a little logo of a coffee cup appeared on the platform to indicate the location of this car and was the only train I know of in North America with an espresso machine for specialty coffees.

Every station but Mission was photographed because Translink Services stretch only as far out as Port Moody and when I originally created this section in 2011 their was no possible transit ways for a same-day return from Mission. As of the opening of the Evergreen Line train there are two return trips on Route 701 from Mission and I look forward to finally riding the entire West Coast Express on a future trip to Vancouver.
