43rd is a South Side elevated station with two wooden side platforms. These are canopied for about two-thirds of their lengths from their northern ends down. The exits are at the northern end. Here there is a staircase down from each platform to a modern station house with a simple brick building on the northside of 43rd Street. An elevator runs from the station house only up to the southbound platform before it continues up above the station to an overpass level. This covered overpass connects to another elevator down to the northbound, Loop-bound platform. There is also staircase from the overpass down to each platform. There are secondary exits to the southside of 43rd Street. On the Southbound platform passengers go through a high exit turnstile directly on the platform before going down a covered staircase to street level. The Loop-bound platform is the opposite, the staircase leads down (covered in mesh to avoid fare beaters) all the way down to street level where there is the high turnstile.
