Fashion Valley Transit Center opened on November 23, 1997 for trolley service and is elevated above Riverwalk Drive, with the platform starting just east of Fashion Valley Road. The stop is a historic bus transfer point and buses originally caught buses on the northern edge of the mall before they moved south on June 15, 1997 in preparation of trolley service, using the newly built bus bays (buses run around the bus loop using left-hand driving) that includes a snack stand, branded as a Cafe.
The station has the required two side platforms, each covered by one long green canopy structure for most of its length (an extreme rarity on the San Diego Trolley). Exits are only from the northern Old Town-bound platform where two overpass lead out to two staircases each (the eastern overpass leads also to an elevator) down to the middle of the transit center's bus bays for 7 connecting routes. The eastern exit continues across to the Garage of the Fashion Valley Shopping Center a large mall (the JC Penny and Macy's logos are visible from the platform). There are 63 free transit spaces at street level across from the platform.
