Edgewood is a local stop on the Northeast Corridor that didn't receive continuous train service in the 1970s and 1980s. It was first stop on Amtrak’s Chesapeake from 1978 through 1983. Service was restored by MARC's extension from Baltimore to Perryville on May 1, 1991. Today the station receives weekday only service from weekdays six northbound and seven southbound MARC Trains per day.
From 2001 until the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 a single southbound Amtrak Northeast Regional train — the first Northeast Regional of the morning — stopped at Perryville on weekdays to supplement MARC trains. Only MARC monthly and weekly passes were accepted on this train with Amtrak never selling tickets or advertising Perryville as a stop on this train.
The station consists of two low-level side platforms along the Northeast Corridor that just two tracks in the area of the station. It is the only station on the entire Northeast Corridor between New York (and technically New Haven) that is located along a two-tracked portion of the Northeast Corridor. All other stations have at least three but generally four if not more tracks.
These two low-level side platforms can each accommodate only about three train cars. The rear three cars on Perryville-bound trains and front three cars on Washington DC-bound trains generally opening. The modern side platforms begin just southwest of Wise Road and run southwest. Wise Road provides the pedestrian connection between the two platforms with historical looking staircases directly down to the western sidewalk of Wise Road beneath the underpass. These staircases have been supplemented by more modern ADA compliant ramps meandering their way down the grassy knoll between each platform's parking lot and Wise Road below. ADA access to trains is provided by mobile movable lifts situated on each platform.
There is evidence that the platforms before the restoration of MARC Service once expended over the railroad bridges over Wise Road. There are abandoned staircases down to a now fenced off eastern sidewalk of Wise Road Road through the underpass.
The platforms are each along parking lots with the station containing 295 total parking spaces. The Perryville-bound platform contains a simple green shelter with an angled roof and little silver benches for waiting passengers.
The Baltimore/Washington-bound platform contains a small modern station house. It has an angled roof, green trim, and red siding. Most of the building contains is a small waiting room (open during MARC departures) with glass walls on all sides. Inside are some simple metal benches. There is also a MARC Ticket Vending machine inside the waiting room. One end of the waiting room contains a single door leading to a very institutional-looking restroom with a metal toilet. Streetside of the station house the tops of the green bollards contain a single letter with white text on a green that spells out Edgewood. The roofline at the southside of the depot extends beyond the end of the waiting room with extra beams. These beams have Edgewood spelled out in silver lettering on top of them.
There are two parking lots on the Washington-bound side of the station. The main lot is located directly along this platform, with an overflow lot on the opposite side of Old Edgewood Road from the main parking lot. At the end of this overflow lot is what resembles at platform canopy along the edge of parking spaces. This is the Edgewood Farmers Market pavilion.
