Shawmut is located in a short tunnel that carries the red line's Ashmont Branch the final short distance. It is one of the rarity of T stations that has been renovated with respect to a historical structure. The stop has two side platforms with cream colored cinderblock looking tiled walls and these platforms each have a single staircase and elevator that lead up to a modern building attached to a historic brick headhouse that has been nicely restored. Inside this headhouse is the stations faregates and doors out to Dayton Street that curves onto Clementine Park. A pedestrian path also runs north of the station for two blocks above the subway line until it emerges from its tunnel and runs up onto an elevated structure, along this path are historic looking signs saying Shawmut Station, Tunnel Trains pointing along the path towards the station.
