Gilman Square is an intermediate stop on the Green Line station with a single island platform for the green line tracks. These tracks run alongside the ROW used by the MBTA Commuter Rail Lowell Line (and Amtrak’s Downeaster). The railroad line in this area is located in the side of the hill, with the west side of the ROW a concrete wall of the ROW (with the Somerville Community Path just above, while the view out beyond the commuter rail tracks is just open with a few historic buildings visible.
The station has entrances at either end of the nearly fully canopied island platform. There are short gaps in the canopy coverage by both of the station’s exits. At the north end of the platform, a narrower path leads between the ends of the platform to an elevator and a covered staircase lead up to a small open air entrance area at street level with CVMs, where Charlie Cards must be activated before use. This leads up to the pedestrian bridge along the southside of School Street.
The station’s closer to the platform main entrance is at the southern end of the platform. Here a staircase and elevator lead to an above the platform fare control area with two CVMs directly over the middle of the tracks, along with a few exposed benches. From here a bridge leads over the Inbound track and to a junction (complete with bollards) exclusively to the Somerville Community Path with a staircase leading up to the campus of Somerville High School. This entrance is 300 feet north down the path from the railroad overpass of Medford Street.
The station doesn’t have dedicated artwork but just photos and historic information about Gilman Square and Somerville.
