Carroll Street is the first stop on the short Smith Street Subway. Daylight can be scene just south from the station platforms has trains rise-up high to cross the Gowanus Canal and reach the Smith-9th Streets Station, the highest station above street level. The northern end of the station is directly below Smith Street while within the station the subway shifts to be just west of Smith Street in preparation for its tunnel portal. The station is a local stop with two side platforms, and the express tracks rising up within the station from their lower level at Bergen Street to be back to the same level as the local tracks to be ready for the single tracked Culver Viaduct.

The station's side platforms have the usual green trim line with a black boarder above the Carroll letters tiled beneath it. The name tablets are completely the same shade of green (boarder and background) with white text spelling out Carroll St. The station pillars are more heavy-duty than most and are painted green. The stations is named after Carroll Street, a street that the station doesn't have an exit to because it crosses Smith Street between the station's two exits.

The station has two exits. At the northern end of the platforms is on platform exits. On the Manhattan-bound platform is a combination of High Entrance/Exit Turnstiles and now regular turnstiles after a part time token booth was removed in 2011. These lead out to streetstairs up to the NE and SE corners of President and Smith Streets. The Coney Island-bound platform has only High Exit, plus High Entrance/Exit Turnstiles that lead past an MVM and to a single streetair up to the NW corner of President and Smith Streets.

At the southern end of the platform there is a staircase up to a very small overpass/mezzanine. This small mezzanine is the soonest location passengers can have a free transfer between F trains from Manhattan to G trains going to points north in Brooklyn, and vice versa (for passengers needing to get between the F and G trains it may be faster to use the cross-platform transfers at both stations and take the A or C train one stop from Hoyt-Schmerhorn to Jay Streets). The middle of this mezzanine is a bank of turnstiles; fully staffed with the 24 hour booth and a signs say the exit is to 2 Place & Smith Street. In 2009, the only open street stair was to the SE corner of 2nd Street and Smith Street. In early 2012 a second entrance joined this street stair up to the NW corner of 2nd Place and Smith Street. This entrance is inside a new apartment development at 360 Smith Street and includes a storefront subway entrance that leads down a flight of stairs and to the southern mezzanine station entrance. There is evidence from a fence to nowhere and crew rooms that once there was also passageways to exits to the NE corner of Third Street and Smith Street, and the SW corner of Second Place and Smith Streets (none of these streets are continuous at Smith Street).
