Dempster is a Purple Line station with two side platforms that retain many older furnishings including a wooden platform and wooden railings now painted white. The southern half of the platforms have simple canopies and this is where the exit is. Two staircases lead down from each platform. Starting from the Loop-bound platform these lead to an intermediate landing and down a few more steps to a cinderblock tunnel where the two staircases from the Linden-bound platform join them. Along the east side of the elevated is the station's small brick station house along the west side of Sherman Place just north of Dempster Street. Inside the station house are the turnstiles. On the southern side is a high exit turnstile allowing exiting passengers to skip going through the building.
