Goleta

The historic Goleta Depot, originally served the Southern Pacific railway and was built in 1901. It looks like so many other SP depots found throughout the west painted yellow with brown trim. The last passenger train (before Amtrak restored service in 1998) left town was in 1965 and was boarded up by the railway in 1973. Locals managed to rally and save the depot and in 1981 it was moved from the end of Depot Street on the edge of downtown Goleta to Lake Los Cameros County Park where it exists today as the South Coast Railroad Museum. Todays location, as the crow flies very close to today's Amtrak station but the freeway of US-101 gets in the way so it is actually a relatively long 2½ mile walk. The depot has standard heritage wooden Goleta signs and other historic ones outside for Wells Fargo Express and Western Union telegraph. Two railroad tracks set the scene outside the depot and situated here is an old Southern Pacific caboose #4023.
