Emeryville Station opened on August 13, 1993 as one of two replacement stations to the damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake 16th Street Station and immediately became the station for connecting thruway bus service (except for passengers connecting to head southbound or from the northbound Coast Starlight that still connect at Oakland-Jack London Square) across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco. The blue with white text platform signs even say Emeryville: San Francisco Connection. For the first year the station opened and operated only for Capitols (now the Capitol Corridor) and San Joaquin Trains while the Oakland-16 Street Station remained open and was the only stop for the Coast Starlight and terminus of the California Zephyr until that station was fully closed on August 5, 1994, and all operations were consolidated in Emeryville. The new Oakland-Jack London Square station opened on May 22, 1995 and all trains were extended there or began stopping there. On October 26, 1997 the California Zephyr was cut back from Oakland and terminates again at Emeryville (after its initial year stopping here) with thruway bus connections to Oakland-Jack London Square and San Francisco. These San Francisco Thurway buses have always connected here and continue to serve every train on the Capitol Corridor, San Joaquin and Coast Starlight that stop in Emeryville. The BART MacArhur Station can also be reached by the free Emery Go-Round Shuttle Service.
The Emeryville Depot is a small modern building station at street level nested on the west side of the train tracks between them and Horton Street. It has simple concrete wall and a grey roof. Inside is an airy white waiting room with a combined ticket and baggage check office, black seats with armrests and a simple combined convenience store, Pete's Coffee and Tea kiosk. This concession has a sign on it warning Zephyr passengers that the first meal served onboard is lunch (and to buy your breakfast here). Colorful banners hang above the skylights in the center of the station ceiling. Leaving street side to the depot are two vehicle loops off Horton Street. The one directly outside the building is for Thruway Connecting Buses only, the farther one for taxis and passenger pick up and drop off at a pedestrian island. Signage on the depot includes distinctive purple letters that light up at night spelling Emeryville. Blue signs with picture grams direct passengers to the services outside the depot including the baggage claim which is simply directly outside on the platform.
Continuing out the opposite side of the depot and trainside are five tracks. Only two have platforms and these two tracks combine into one track beyond each end of the station platform. There is an extremely long side platform for the easternmost track 1. This platform is long enough to accommodate the entire length of the long-distance California Zephyr and Coast Starlight that normally stop on this track nearly back to back. It is over a quarter-mile long. This platform has an additional entrance via a ramp at its northern end to 64th Street and Overland Avenue. A high black fence otherwise separates it from surrounding property and street. It has no additional amenities for waiting passengers. There is a second much shorter platform for track 2 that has all access via a super wide pedestrian crossing across track 1 and the stations depot and two smaller pedestrian crossings at each end (the southern one is beyond the end of the platform for track 1). This platform can accommodate the short Capitol Corridor/San Joaquin trains but the Zephyr or Starlight would exceed its length. The platform for track 2 has a small black canopy held up by concrete pillars directly across from the depot. There is finally a pedestrian footbridge just north of the depot with pink walls and elevators with staircases that ramp around them that have green railings. This connects the side platform for Track 1 and a parking lot and Shellmound Street across from the station.
