Hammond-Whiting, IN | Pere Marquette (1984-2009) | St Joseph, MI |
The Original New Buffalo Amtrak station was in service from August 5, 1984 to October 26, 2009 with the Pere Marquette Train stopping. On October 26, 2009 the new modern train station closer to downtown along the Amtrak-owned Michigan Line opened, with train service replaced by the Wolverine and Blue Water. The former Pere Marquette Station consists of a small platform (for about two cars), two wooden lampposts, a bus shelter, pay phone and single sign just norht of the grade-crossing of Whittaker Street near Washington Street. Today the shelter and signage has been removed, but the pad, support for the pay phone, and two black posts that once supported the New Buffalo, MI sign are still intact. Across Whittaker Street a short ways from this former station is the small New Buffalo Railroad Museum which opened in 1989 in a replica of the original Pere Marquette Railroad depot, a few train cars are outside. Unforchunately the museum had just closed for the day when I visited this station by car. South of the station all trains also go through a grain elevator.
